Nine Sound Engines: The Kronos 3 harnesses the power of nine specialized synthesis engines, each capable of operating as a standalone synthesizer. These include:
- SGX-2 Premium Piano: Features high-definition, non-looped stereo samples of four grand pianos (German, Japanese, Berlin, and Italian), with sympathetic string resonance and una corda samples.
- EP-1 MDS Electric Piano: Uses Multi-Dimensional Synthesis (MDS) to authentically model six classic electric pianos and their associated vintage effects.
- CX-3 Tonewheel Organ: Models classic tonewheel organs, including realistic vacuum tube amp and rotary speaker effects.
- HD-1 High Definition Synthesizer: Korg's most powerful PCM sound engine, offering a massive library of sampled instruments and waveform data.
- MS-20EX & PolysixEX: Component Modeling Technology (CMT) recreations of the classic MS-20 and Polysix analog synthesizers, including patch panel functionality for the MS-20.
- AL-1 Analog Synthesizer: A high-fidelity analog modeling engine for creating complex, alias-free analog sounds.
- MOD-7 Waveshaping VPM Synthesizer: Combines VPM (Variable Phase Modulation) with waveshaping, ring modulation, and PCM sample playback.
- STR-1 Plucked Strings: A physical modeling engine that realistically recreates stringed instruments like guitars, harps, and ethnic instruments, and allows for the creation of unique, non-existent sounds.
- Sequencer and Recorder: Features a comprehensive 16-track MIDI sequencer and a 16-track audio recorder that captures up to four tracks simultaneously at 24-bit/48 kHz resolution.
- KARMA and Drum Tracks: Includes Korg's second-generation KARMA (Kay Algorithmic Realtime Music Architecture) technology to generate complex phrases, drum grooves, and backing tracks based on your input. The Drum Track function provides professional, ready-to-use rhythm patterns.
- Open Sampling System: Allows for sampling external audio sources or resampling the Kronos's own output in any mode, with extensive editing features like time stretch and time slice.
- Control Interface: Features a large, responsive 8-inch SVGA (800 x 600 pixel) color TouchView display, a four-way joystick, a vector joystick, a ribbon controller, nine sliders, and eight knobs for extensive real-time control.
- Physical Design: Built with a durable powder-coated metal chassis and elegant black wooden side panels. It is available in 61-key (natural touch semi-weighted), 73-key (RH3 hammer action), and 88-key (RH3 hammer action) configurations.
- Seamless Sound Transitions (SST): This function prevents sounds and effects from cutting off when switching between programs or modes during a performance.
- Storage: The workstation includes an internal 120GB SSD for massive storage of samples and sound libraries.
